Hi, I’m Dana.
I love using colour to abstract the world around me into a dreamy, tropical-inspired wonderland. I seek out the magic in everyday moments and bring it to life with my paint brush and a feminine palette of acrylic paint. My work is a visual expression of the joy I feel when I’m surrounded by my family and the beauty of the Canadian landscape.
In March 2020, the world was locked down and I was bored. I was a burnt-out journalist-turned-stay-at-home mom, used to days jam-packed with the errands and appointments that come with raising three busy kids. But suddenly, they had nowhere to go and I was determined to use my time wisely, by writing the next Great Canadian Novel.
I was convinced that clouds murals I’d seen online were exactly what I needed to get inspired. I was obsessed with them but they were all out of my budget. While my kids navigated the world of online learning, I decided to try something new too and painted the clouds myself. I figured if it was a disaster, I’d just paint over it.
Spoiler alert: I wasn’t inspired to write anything.
I was inspired to painT!
I love Canada but the not the winters. I paint to beat my seasonal depression. Images that evoke memories of sun-soaked hugs and lazy days on the beach remind me that summer wouldn’t be half as sweet without the grey days of winter. As Leonard Cohen said “there is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.” I paint to find the light in the darkness and I hope my work might do the same for someone else.
Art has become my vessel for capturing snapshots of beautiful meditative moments in time. I welcome you to join me in the magic of my emerging art journey.
